This is one of those music docs that reshuffle our ideas of artists we thought we knew. It is based on the premise that Elvis’s much-derided Vegas years were not the nadir of his career but – to begin with, at least – a triumph.
So what about the cliché of the sweaty, drug-addled figure stretching the seams of his jumpsuit and mumbling into his mic? That came later, apparently, when the grind of doing 600 shows had taken its toll. But when he opened in Vegas in 1969, Elvis’s return to live performance after eight years away was full of fire and brilliance – and we see the clips to prove it.
We see a lot of great clips, including a lean, athletic Elvis launching Suspicious Minds on the world for the first time. Plus something you don’t see every day: Elvis at the piano.
When Elvis Presley began performing in Las Vegas in 1969, many believed that was the end of his career, especially after the excitement of his '68 Comeback Special. This documentary follows his time in the gambling capital and argues that it was a musical renaissance for the King, who reached his peak as both as a singer and performer - jumpsuits and all.
